Abstract

This study was done to measure the learning needs on disaster nursing in community health nurses of Korea and to develop a curriculum based on its results. For data collection, researchers developed a questionnaire which is consisted of general characteristics, disaster senses, experiences in disaster situation, recognition of importance of disaster nursing, and contents in need of learning. The data from 491 of community health center nurses was analyzed through SAS program.
The main nursing roles during disaster situation were and triage, first-aids, transfer on response stage, and patient consultation, chronic patients management, communicable disease control on recovery stage. The respondants showed their learning needs on 12 categories in average by 3.1-3.7 from 4 point of Likert's Scale.
On the basis of the results and consultation from experts, a curriculum of disaster nursing for community nurses was developed. The curriculum was evaluated through a tentative workshop and refined finally. According to the curriculum, a teaching material was developed, which is consisted of 4 chapters, Disaster Responses and Nursing, and Disaster Recovery and Nursing.
It is recommended that a further study improve the above general knowledge on disaster nursing for community health nurses to be more applicable to different job environments such as school, industry, health post, etc. To make best use of the knowledge, systemical support should be considered on governmental level.
